Download the guide (PDF, 9 MB)Aix-en-Provence has been a university town since 1409, when Louis II of Anjou founded the University of Aix. In 2010 Aix had 35,413 students, a large share of its population. Today Aix is mainly home to the faculties of law, economics, languages and the humanities.

The websites seloger.com (estate agents) and leboncoin.fr (private landlords) have the largest choice of listings.
Rents range from €600 (27 m² furnished studio) to €1,500 (100 m² unfurnished three-bedroom flat). Flat-sharing is the cheapest option, but furnished flat-shares are hard to find. For something cheaper, look outside the historic centre, or ask for a room in one of the university residences (apply early!).
By train: the easiest way to get to Aix is the TGV. A direct TGV runs every day from Luxembourg to Aix-en-Provence TGV (about 7½ hours, via Metz, Strasbourg and Lyon). With one change in Paris-Est or Strasbourg it is often faster (from about 6 hours). Tickets are on SNCF Connect: the earlier you book, the cheaper it is.
Tip: if you’re 12 to 27, the Carte Avantage Jeune is worth it (about €50 a year, often on sale): up to 30% off trains in France.
From the TGV station to town: the TGV station is outside Aix. The shuttle bus (line 40) runs every 15 minutes to the bus station (about 15 minutes, €6).
By plane: Ryanair flies direct from Luxembourg (Findel) to Marseille-Provence about every second day (about 1½ hours). From the airport, line 40 runs to Aix every 30 minutes (about 30 minutes, €10).
By car: about 950 km and 9 to 10 hours with breaks, via Metz, Dijon and Lyon. Expect about €70–80 in motorway tolls each way. Parking in the old town is rare and expensive: ask whether your flat comes with a space.
Car-sharing: we have a WhatsApp group where you’ll find others driving up or down. Ask the committee for the link at comite@letzaix.com.
Aix-en-Provence is in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-Rhône département and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. The city offers an excellent quality of life, with 300 days of sunshine a year and pleasant temperatures in both summer and winter. With around 140,000 inhabitants, Aix is fairly small: you can walk everywhere, including to university!
As the name says, Aix lies in the heart of Provence. There are plenty of trips to make nearby: the vineyards (with excellent wine), the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, the Gorges du Verdon… The sea is never far either: by car or bus, the beach is half an hour away.
For tourist information and city news, see the official website of the Aix-en-Provence Tourist Office. A short guide to student life (in French) is available here.
